Crystals are the most important substance in the whole universe as they are crucial in enabling faster-than-light travel via the portals that are scattered through the universe. However, you are not the only one who seek it... and the competition is tough. Do your very best to defend the crystals you’ve found from the grimy hands of the aliens as you travel the universe in search of more crystals.
Portal Battles starts you off with a simple tutorial, but as the gameplay is very straightforward and simple, you will be able to get right into the game pretty quickly. In this game, all you need to do is to match up 3 or more of the playing pieces of the same color. By matching 10 or more tiles together, you’ll get a special tile that can be later triggered to clear off quite a lot of tile at once from the board. Of course, the longer your matches are, the higher the damage your hero will do, which admittedly is something you’ll need to do in order to take on tougher enemies later on.
The game features quite a range of enemies that will definitely keep you on your toes. Not only that these enemies are equipped with different weapons that can cause varying degrees of damage to your hero, some enemies can even move superfast or have very huge health pools that you have to deplete. Not to mention, in this game, enemies will move slowly (how slow will depend on the type of alien) across the battlefield and you will have to kill them before they reach your character. They mustn’t – and I repeat they mustn’t - reach your character, because once they do, you’ll instantly die and well... it’s game over for you.
The color of the tiles you match will also affect the damage you do and it depends on the color of the shirt the alien is wearing or tank the alien is in. You’ll need to match up tile with the same color as the aliens in order to deal substantial damage. If not, your matches will feel as though you’re whacking the aliens with a Styrofoam sword. There will definitely be times when there aren’t enough tiles of the color you need to kill an enemy. In that case, you’ll need to match up tiles of other colors in hopes of getting the colors you need, or even better... a power-up.
Power-ups can be a pretty tricky topic in Portal Battles as there are many ways you can earn them- purchased using the coins that have dropped off fallen enemies, or earned by accumulating a sufficient amount of tiles that match the power-up’s color. There is quite a variety (13 in total) for the latter type of power-ups, including Grenade that can clear all enemies currently on the battlefield, First aid kit to restore your health, and Freezer which can freeze all enemies currently on the battlefield for a few precious seconds. You can choose which power-ups you’d like to use prior to entering a game level. However, you can only “equip” up to 5 power-ups and each equip-able slot is associated to a specific tile color.
Like most match-3 games out there, you can earn up to 3 stars per level and by getting a minimum of 1 star, you’ll be able to progress to the next level. However, you might want to gather as many stars as you can as they are important in helping you to unlock new power-ups. In terms of levels, there are plenty of levels provided in Portal Battles at the moment and there will be more to come.
Interestingly, certain levels in this game will allow you access to special structures, such as crystal mines that you can then collect crystals (premium currency) and factories which will let you unlock a new ability and upgrade said ability using the crystals you have. There are also daily crates that will provide you with plenty of freebies, including premium currency, power-ups and in-game coins.
Furthermore, Portal Battles provides a nice range of achievements for you to acquire and a leaderboard for you to track your upward climb on the rank ladder. These features will only be available if you log into your Google Account though. If you would prefer not to log-in, you can do so, but you’ll lose out on some of the features this game has to offer.
The best part about Portal Battles is that there is absolutely nothing in the game, such as a life or energy system, to restrict your play time. In other words, you are free to play a level as many times as you like! Being a free-to-play game, Portal Battles does offer plenty of purchasable advantage, like power-ups or in-game coins, in its in-app store. However, if you don’t mind watching an ad video or two, you can also get some free coins there.
Portal Battles had a rather slow community following during its release. However, considering that this game is not only fun but also challenging... even for the most experienced match-3 experts... it is expected that the game’s community will definitely grow. So, if you enjoy being one of the first few to give this game a try, you most certainly should, and if you happen to enjoy playing the game, don’t forget to recommend it to your friends!
The brightly colored and cartoony graphics have a rather distinct art style that does set Portal Battles apart from the other combat match-3 games on the mobile platform. In regard to its music, this game features a background music that has a pretty fast beat with a hint of influence from old-time western music.
To sum this all up, Portal Battles is a rather unique combat match-3 game that offers a lot of innovation and uniqueness to the genre... if only you know where to look. The game has an interesting game mechanism and enemies, as well as a very nice variety of power-ups for you to use to your advantage. So, if you want a bit more challenging in match-3 games, Portal Battles is definitely a game you should try.
