Gameplay

The game starts with introducing a tutorial guide to you, Chief Wikiwiki. He will teach you the basics of how to manage your own dino zoo as well as your tribal village. Can’t wait to start? Well, great, let’s get right into it!

Being a dinosaur-themed game, you can be assured that Dino Zoo offers a huge range of dinosaurs each with their own “elements”, for example, fire dino is obviously associated with fire while the earth dino is linked to the element of earth. This elemental association is important as each dinosaur in this game has its own set of skills, up to a maximum of 3 skills. The first skill is unlocked for free, but you’ll need to get your dinosaurs to level 7 and 11 in order to unlock the other 2 skills. These skills, as this review will later explain, are important when you decide to pit your dinosaurs against other players’ dinosaurs.

How to get your own dinosaurs? Well, you have to first buy a dino egg from the market. Then, you should place the egg in the hatchery and wait for it to hatch – it can take quite awhile. Do take note that you can only have up to 3 eggs in the hatchery and you are unable to build more hatcheries or upgrade the hatchery you have. After the baby dinosaur is hatched, you will need to transfer it to a habitat that is suitable for it. Oh and the dinosaur also has its own name, which you can later change by going to the dinosaur’s profile if you like.

Now, habitats... what are they? They are homes for your little baby dinosaurs and similarly to dinosaurs, they have their own “elements”. Each habitat has limited space for dinosaurs and you will need to buy more habitats if you want to add more dinosaurs. Once you add a dinosaur into a habitat, the habitat will start generating money for you. Be sure to collect your money before the money accumulated reaches the coin capacity. These habitats can also be upgraded to increase its coin capacity, so you can collect more coins. However, in order to earn cons at a higher rate, you’ll need to level up your dinosaurs instead.

Habitats can also take up a rather large space on the ground and soon, you may need to get more space! In Dino Zoo, “land expansions” don’t exist as you, being the almighty tribal chief, already own all the land on the map. However, the land is filled with wildly-growing greeneries, which cover your land. Thus, you will need to pay coins to get your villagers to clear shrubs and trees (trees can cost a lot of money) from your land so you can add more stuff into your dinosaur zoo.

Your baby dinosaur seems a bit down even though it is in its new home and do you know why? Well, it’s obvious, isn’t it? Your dinosaur is hungry! You should always remember to feed your dinosaurs to help them grow (or technically these dinos will “level up”). When you reach certain level milestones, the look of your dinosaur will change as it turns from being a baby dinosaur into an adolescent and later into a mature adult. The higher the level the dinosaur is, the more coins you’ll earn within a fixed period of time.

How can you get food? Well, since you’re the chief of a tribe, you can just build farms for your tribesmen or women to work in. There is quite a range of crops that you can plant and harvest, including corn, strawberries and pumpkins. If you need more work power, you can erect more houses to attract nomads to join your tribe. It’s a win-win situation actually since they will be getting shelter and protection in return for their work contributions at the farms. Do take note that different types of houses will have different villagers’ capacity. Oh and don’t forget to keep your villagers happy by adding decorations to your small tribal village as well!

You can also crossbreed your dinosaurs at the breed cave even though they are of different elements to get a unique hybrid dinosaur that possess both elemental advantages and disadvantages. Crossbreeding can take some time before you can get the egg to hatch. Though, if you can spare it, you could use premium cash to hasten the process of breeding as well as hatching so you can get to see your new hybrid baby dinosaur much faster. For habitats, these hybrids can be placed in either habitat the elements that they possess allow.

Now that your dinosaurs are all taken care of and grown (Your dinosaurs have to be at least level 4 before they can be added to your team), perhaps it is time to test their strength in the dinosaur arena! In the arena, you’ll usually send in your dinosaurs one by one for a 1-on-1 duel against another player. The combat system is somewhat similar to Pokemon, whereby you will choose the skill you want your dinosaur to use against its opponent. Certain element is good against another element, for instance, fire dinos are great against earth dinos while earth dinos are great against water dinos. By knowing which elemental dino to use against your opponent’s dinos, you have a greater chance of winning the match. Thus, during a duel, if you know you have another dinosaur that is more suitable to handle the battle, you should definitely switch out your current dinosaur for it.

However, to use your dino’s elemental powers during combat, you will need to obtain magic mushrooms, which are dropped when the opposing dinosaur is attacked. In other words, you will need to use your dino’s basic attacks earlier in the battle before you can start hurling incredibly-deadly powers at the enemy. Basic attacks depends heavily on the level of the dinosaur, hence, if your dinosaur is woefully under-leveled, it’ll definitely get trashed even though it has the elemental advantage.

In Dino Zoo, there is even a Pokedex-like feature, called the Dino book, whereby every new dinosaurs you purchase or breed will be recorded. So, get to Dino Zoo now and start “collecting em all”!

Join the community of more than 2.3 million virtual dinosaur-keepers by liking’s Facebook fan page and that is not including the fan and player base that the game has over at the Google Play store or the App store. The page is filled with dinosaur experts and enthusiasts, so if you are as equally passionate about dinosaurs as they are, well, this is a great place to meet new friends! The fan page is very active and constantly posts dinosaur quizzes for its players to enjoy! The game also releases new dinosaurs every week or so, and if you have an OCD in wanting to collect them all, you will definitely not be bored with this game!

Graphics/ Sound

Dino Zoo contains very cartoonish graphics as compared to other dinosaur zoo games like Jurassic Park Builder, though the details are rather nicely done. However, some may feel that the concept behind designing the building models in this game is hugely flawed – the housing in this game retains the primitive look, but then the decoration of the decorative buildings seems oddly modern. In terms of sound, Dino Zoo provides a tribal-themed music that is rather catchy and pleasant to listen to, but as the game only provides 1 type of music and that it is on loop, you may soon get tired of it. If this happens, you can simply turn the music off if you like.

Conclusion

In short, Dino Zoo is a rather fun dinosaur-themed zoo management/ simulation game that allows you to set up and manage your very own tribal village and dinosaur zoo! In this game, you can purchase dino eggs, hatch them at the hatchery and introduce them to their new homes – the habitats! By feeding them regularly, you can grow them (or “level them up”) from the baby stage right up to adulthood. Food can be easily obtained from farms that are worked on by your tribesmen while coins can be collected from habitats instead. Don’t forget to add more decorations and houses to make your people happy! You can also crossbreed your mature dinos to create amazing hybrid dinosaurs. Get a great team of dinosaurs ready? Well, you can head on over to the dino arena and pit your dinosaurs against other players’ dinos too! Sounds like fun to you? Great, add Dino Zoo to your Facebook game library today!
